FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions from our beloved customers

  • Are small cast iron radiators powerful enough to heat a room?
Yes. While they have a smaller footprint, small or short radiators often compensate by having more columns (depth). A 4-column or 6-column short radiator can often produce the same BTU (heat output) as a much taller 2-column radiator, making them highly effective for their size.
  • Where is the best place to install a short cast iron radiator?
Short radiators (typically 300mm to 500mm high) are ideal for "dead space" areas. The most popular locations are under low window sills, inside bay windows, or in loft conversions with sloped ceilings and low knee walls.
  • Can small cast iron radiators help prevent window condensation?
Absolutely. Placing a short cast iron radiator directly under a window is a classic heating strategy. The rising warm air creates a "heat curtain" that counteracts the cold air hitting the glass, significantly reducing the chance of condensation and mould growth on sills.
  • Are small cast iron radiators more efficient for small rooms?
They are highly efficient because they allow you to match the heat output exactly to the room's requirements. Because cast iron retains heat for so long, a small unit in a compact space (like a hallway or cloakroom) will keep the area warm long after the boiler has cycled off.
  • How do I choose between a "short" and a "slim" radiator?
"Short" refers to the height, while "slim" usually refers to the depth (2-column). If you have a low window but plenty of floor space, a short, deep (4-6 column) radiator is best. If you have a narrow hallway, a tall, slim (2-column) radiator is the better choice.
  • Do small cast iron radiators need wall stays?
Yes. Even though they are smaller, cast iron is very dense and heavy. We recommend using wall stays for all our radiators to ensure they cannot be accidentally knocked or tipped, especially if they are installed in high-traffic areas like narrow hallways.
  • Are they suitable for bathrooms and ensuites?
Yes, they are a popular choice for bathrooms where wall space is limited by mirrors, cabinets, or tiling. A small, ornate cast iron radiator adds a luxury "boutique hotel" feel that modern towel rails often lack.
  • Can I use these in a conservatory with low dwarf walls?
Short cast iron radiators are the perfect solution for conservatories. Since you cannot use tall radiators against glass, our 300mm or 450mm models fit perfectly against the dwarf brick walls, providing the high heat output needed to counteract the heat loss through the glass.
  • Do small radiators take less time to heat up?
Because they hold a smaller volume of water than their larger counterparts, they will reach their peak temperature slightly faster. However, they still provide the same long-lasting radiant heat that cast iron is famous for.
  • Will a small radiator work with my existing pipework?
Yes. Even our smallest models use standard 1/2" or 3/4" BSP connections, making them compatible with standard UK copper or PEX pipework. If you’re replacing a modern compact steel radiator, you may just need to adjust the pipe positions slightly to accommodate the depth.
  • How do I calculate the BTU for a small space?
Use our free BTU calculator to work out the number of BTUs you’ll need to heat your room. Once you have that number, you can look for a short radiator and simply increase the number of sections or columns until you reach the required output.
  • Is it worth buying a small cast iron radiator instead of a steel one?
If you value aesthetics and heat retention, yes. A small steel radiator loses its heat almost immediately after the heating is turned off. A small cast iron radiator will stay warm for an hour or more, providing a more consistent and comfortable temperature in smaller rooms.
