FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions from our beloved customers

  • Are Victorian style radiators efficient?
Yes, Victorian style radiators are highly efficient due to the "thermal mass" of cast iron. While they take longer to reach temperature than modern steel panels, they retain heat significantly longer. This means they continue to warm your room long after the central heating has been turned off, preventing the rapid temperature drops common with thinner materials.
  • Is it worth replacing old radiators with new Victorian style cast iron ones?
Absolutely. While original antiques have charm, new reproduction Victorian radiators offer the same classic aesthetic with modern reliability. New models are pressure-tested to modern standards, come with comprehensive warranties, and are designed to be compatible with modern boiler systems and heat pumps, eliminating the risk of leaks or internal corrosion found in century-old units.
  • How do Victorian radiators work?
Victorian radiators work through a combination of convection and radiant heat. Hot water from your central heating system flows through the hollow cast iron columns. The large surface area of the columns heats the surrounding air (convection), while the dense metal emits "soft" infrared heat (radiation) that warms objects and people in the room directly.
  • How do you bleed a Victorian style radiator?
Bleeding a Victorian radiator is similar to a modern one but requires a specific radiator key. Turn off your heating and let the radiator cool. Locate the bleed valve (usually at the top on one end). Insert the key and turn it slowly anti-clockwise. You will hear a hissing sound as air escapes. Once water starts to trickle out, tighten the valve back up.
  • What is the best temperature to keep your central heating on?
For the best balance of comfort and energy efficiency, the Energy Saving Trust recommends setting your thermostat between 18°C and 21°C. Because Victorian radiators provide a steady, consistent heat, many users find they can set their thermostat slightly lower than they would with steel radiators and still feel perfectly warm.
  • Can I install Victorian radiators on a modern central heating system?
Yes. Our Victorian radiators are designed with standard BSP (British Standard Pipe) bushings, meaning they can be plumbed directly into any modern wet central heating system, whether powered by a gas boiler, oil, or renewable energy sources like air source heat pumps.
  • Do I need special valves for Victorian style radiators?
While standard valves will fit, we highly recommend traditional style valves to complete the look. You can choose between manual valves or thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), which allow you to control the temperature of each room individually, further increasing your home's efficiency.
  • How heavy are Victorian cast iron radiators?
Cast iron is very heavy. Depending on the number of sections, a Victorian radiator can weigh anywhere from 30kg to over 150kg. It’s essential to check that your floor can support the weight and to use "wall stays" to prevent the radiator from tipping forward, especially in homes with children or pets.
  • Do Victorian radiators require more maintenance?
Beyond occasional bleeding and a quick dust between the columns, they require very little maintenance. Because cast iron is naturally resistant to internal corrosion, they often outlast the boilers they are connected to.
  • Can I get Victorian style radiators in different colours?
Yes! Unlike the limited options of the 19th century, modern Victorian reproductions can be finished in a vast array of RAL colours, metallic finishes (like Pewter or Anthracite), or even hand-polished to a high shine to suit your interior decor.
  • Why are they called "column" radiators?
The term refers to the vertical tubes that make up each section. The more columns a radiator has, the deeper it sits from the wall and the higher its heat output (BTU) will be.
  • Are Victorian radiators suitable for heat pumps?
Yes. Because heat pumps run at lower water temperatures, they require radiators with a larger surface area to heat a room effectively. The multi-column design of Victorian radiators provides exactly this, making them an excellent partner for eco-friendly heating transitions.
  • How do I calculate what size Victorian radiator I need?
You need to calculate the BTU (British Thermal Unit) requirement for your room. This is based on the room's dimensions, window types, and insulation levels. Once you have your BTU figure, you can choose a Victorian radiator with enough sections to meet that output. We recommend using our free online BTU calculator or contacting our team for a precise recommendation.
